UV Systems
If you have already identified a UV unit to purchase, please select the "UV Systems" category on the left, and select the subcategory of your product. If you need some assistance selecting a UV unit, please read on...
UV is versatile technology used for disinfecting water, other liquids, hard surfaces and air. Using the same germicidal rays as the sun, but hundreds of times stronger, UV offers a reliable, cost effective, environmentally friendly alternative to chemicals and their resulting bi-products. Because UV sterilization is a purely physical, rather than a chemical process, it doesn’t alter water’s chemistry, taste, smell or pH.
Critical to the proper functioning of a UV Unit is the selection of a unit that will provide a proper UV exposure. UV exposure is measured in µW/cm2 (Micro-Watts per square centimeter, or watts per square meter divided by 0.01). If this is a bit confusing, don’t worry too much about the technicalities here, just understand that the higher the µW/cm2, the greater the exposure to sterilizing light. Just how much UV exposure is ideal for your aquarium or pond?
- Reef, or Fish Only With Live Rock (“FOWLR”) Aquariums: Select a UV unit from Table 1 below that generates a UV exposure in the 30,000 to 45,000 µW/cm2 range. Greater exposure will destroy the planktonic food supply for the reef.
- Marine Fish Aquariums Without Coral or Live Rock: Select a UV unit from Table 1 below that generates a UV exposure of 75,000 to 90,000 µW/cm2 to effectively control fish diseases.
- Partially Shaded Ponds: Use a UV system rated as a clarifier in Table 2 below for the total number of gallons in your pond to create a natural-looking water clarity.
- Freshwater Aquariums and Ponds in Full Sun: Use a UV system rated as a sterilizer in Table 2 below for the total number of gallons in your aquarium or pond for crystal clear water.
